Meditation number 38

Form and power 2 Tim. 3 :5

A picture is worth many words. Imagine a frame, a picture frame, like those we see on the walls of homes and also art galleries and museums. Some are prettier than others although they be but accessories to present and highlight a painting, a picture, a portrait. One would find strange a wall covered with frames without a subject inside. It is what is framed which gives the frame its reason to exist. Many verses in the Scriptures relate to the frame. One thinks of 1 Tim. 2 and 3 and Tite 2:1-10 among others. These are of the first importance but they must be understood in the spirit of what they frame the mystery of godliness, God manifest in flesh our Lord Jesus Christ, the One whose image, reflection, truth must be thus surrounded. Let us remember then the One who must be preeminent, Christ and not the frame. This way, all will be in order and in proportion, we will be kept from a legal or sectarian spirit often stained with a touch of pharisaic choking on gnats and swallowing camels. The form of godliness is essential and to be retained at all cost but this godliness must also be seen in power and that will only be by reflecting the One Who is its perfect expression in love, grace and truth, our blessed Lord Jesus (2 Cor. 3:18). Such a beautiful picture commands a beautiful frame.
