The Word of God presents different persons on whose head the oil of anointing was poured. The oil is a well known figure of the Spirit of God; and poured on the head, it symbolized the calling to a particular office. Thus were anointed those called to be kings (1 Sam. 16:13), or prophets (1 Kings 19:16) or priests (Ex. 30 :30, Ps. 133:2). The Lord Jesus, the anointed of the Lord, combines in Himself alone these three offices; He is the King of kings (Apoc. 19:16), the promised Prophet, greater than Moses (Deut. 18:15,18), and the Great High Priest forever after the order of Melchisedec (Heb. 6:20). But there is another person in Scripture who also received the oil on his head; it was the healed leper during his cleansing ceremony (Lev. 14:18, 29). To what office would such a one be called? In God’s wondrous grace, once washed in the precious blood of Christ, the guilty sinner, of which the cleansed leper is but a type, is intimately associated with Christ (the anointed One) and is called, like a king, to reign with Christ (1 Tim. 2:12, Rev. 5:10, 20:4, 22:5), and as a prophet, to speak of and for Christ (1 Cor. 14:31, 1 Pi. 4:11) and, as a priest, to offer sacrifices to God by Christ (Rev. 1:6, Heb. 13:15, 1 Pet. 2 :5,9). We are established in Christ and the One Who has anointed us is God (2 Cor. 1:21). What dignity of office for such wretched ones (LF 336-1)!
