Meditation number 30

Two women of Thyatira

Thyatira is mentioned twice in Scripture (Acts 16:14 - Rev. 2:18) and in each case a woman is mentioned by name, Lydia in Acts and Jezabel in Revelation (Acts 16:14-16 and Rev. 2:18-30). What a contrast however between the pious Lydia and the wicked Jezabel! Lydia was attentive to the teachings of Paul and was of service to the saints of God (v. 15, 40) while Jezabel clearly disobeys these teachings and introduces, by her own teachings, much wickedness (Rev. 2:20, 1 Cor. 14:34-35, 1 Tim. 2:11-15) seducing and corrupting the servants of God. The woman who, in the fear of God, obeys the Lord shall be saved in childbearing (1 Tim. 2:15) a contrast to Jezabel's bed of tribulation and the putting to death of her children (Rev. 2:23). Jezabel is no doubt symbolic of the wickedness at work in the Church at Thyatira. May all our beloved sisters be true Lydias and all our gatherings kept from the corruption of Jezabel.
